Anchorage’s Christine Hemry posted her first wins for Westmont College tennis in singles and doubles.
She also suffered her first heartbreaking loss.
Hemry dropped a topsy-turvy three-set decision at women’s No. 5 singles to Alice Marques of Fresno Pacific by a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 count.
Sometimes even in defeat a player’s winning character is revealed.
Battling back in the second set after getting served a bagel in the first set is challenging mentally and physically, but Hemry displayed courage and confidence.
“Christine really settled in toward the end of the first set and took control in the second. She was playing solid, smart and assertive tennis,” said Westmont coach Ellie Johnson.
Hemry, of South High fame, is in her first year of competition for the 14th-ranked Warriors, a NAIA team in Santa Barbara, California.
She won her first singles match 6-1, 6-4 over Madison Swaney of Biola.
Her first win at No. 2 doubles with partner Rachel Jackson was 6-1 triumph over a team from William Jessup.
In Alaska, Hemry was a four-time singles state champion in high school and hails from the most iconic tennis family in the state.
