Akiak’s Agatha Andrews was named Alaska Alaska Athlete of the Week after defending her No. 1 national wrestling ranking in style by winning the Grand View Open title in Des Moines, Iowa.
She pinned all three opponents, including the fourth ranked wrestler in the championship match.
The University of Jamestown star sits atop the NAIA rankings in the 191-pound weight class.
Andrews, a junior, is a two-time WCWA All-American who last year advanced all the way to the national finals in her weight class. The Mt. Edgecombe graduate’s second-place finish tied her for the highest finish in Jamestown women’s wrestling history.
The athlete of the week recipient is selected by a panel each Friday and announced Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Sports Guys on CBS Sports Radio 590AM and 96.7FM.
