Ellie Scherffius

With the match on the line, Eagle River’s Ellie Scherffius rose to the occasion to save the University of Montana volleyball team.

With her team facing match point in the fifth set, the sophomore middle blocker blasted a kill that extended the match and kickstarted a late run that gave the Griz a road win over archrival Montana State in the Big Sky Conference.

Scherffius, of Chugiak High fame, finished with 10 kills – none more important than the one she hammered with Montana trailing 15-14 in the final set the Grizz eventually won 17-15 to clinch the match.

The 6-foot sophomore out of Alaska just keeps on coming up clutch for Montana.

She leads the team in total blocks and hitting percentage and has reached double figures in kills in seven of 21 matches.

Scherffius ranks fourth in the Big Sky with a .397 hitting percentage and is among the top 10 with 75 blocks.
