Palmer’s Andrew Kurka was named our Alaska Athlete of the Week after winning bronze at the World Para Snow Sports Championships in Lillehammer, Norway.

This was Kurka’s first podium appearance at the world championships since 2017.

In the sitting downhill even, the 29-year-old had the fastest time at the first split and ranked second at the second split before finishing third overall.

On Wednesday, Kurka followed up with his second bronze medal of the championships in the men’s giant slalom. The two medals should help Kurka’s confidence as he prepares for the upcoming Winter Paralympics March 4-13 in China.

Kurka struck gold at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. He also won gold in the downhill at the World Championships in 2017 and World Cup in 2020 and 2018.

The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
