Alev Kelter

Eagle River’s Alev Kelter and Anchorage’s Kathryn Treder have been named by USA women’s rugby to a pool of 42 players that will compete for a World Cup roster spot.

The players will participate in pre-World Cup competitions, including the Pacific Four Series in June, to help Eagles head coach Rob Cain select the final Eagles 15s squad that will compete in the World Cup in New Zealand in October.

Kelter is American rugby royalty – an Olympian in 2016 and 2020, and a member of World Cup teams in 2017 and 2018.

The 31-year-old is one of the best players in the world, a mix of power at running back and precision at kicker. She’s double trouble, a player who converts 5-point tries and cashes in on 2-point conversions.

Kelter is currently playing professionally in England with Saracens of the Premier 15s. And was just named Player of the Month after averaging 9.5 points, 8.3 tackles and 1.3 steals per match.

Kelter, of Chugiak High fame, was a star flag football and soccer player in high school and went on to the University of Wisconsin, where she was an All-Big Ten soccer player and NCAA Frozen Four All-Tournament Team hockey player.

She was made for rugby.

Even in England, home of the No. 1-ranked squad in the world, the Alaskan has showcased her incredible impact on the field. In one match in March she scored half of her team’s points in a 30-19 victory over the Bristol Bears. That matchup was between the top teams in the league, but Kelter stole the show.

She scored 15 points on a variety of tries and conversions, highlighted by her remarkable running back skills. Kelter has a bruising style, routinely running through the grasp of would-be tacklers.

Treder, of West High fame, made her USA women’s rugby national team debut in 2019 against Canada.

The 25-year-old currently plays in the USA Rugby Women’s Premier League for Beantown RFC in Boston.

Treder first made the national team in 2019 and looked primed to take her game to the next level before COVID shut down the sport for two years.

She stuck with it and now she’s back with the national team.’

Treder was a multi-sport star in high school, wrestling for the West boys team and competing in track and field in the girls long jump and triple jump.

She fell in love with rugby at Stanford University, where she joined the club team. It’s a passion that’s turned into a profession.
