Two up-and-coming mountain runners made remarkable improvements over one year  turned in outstanding performances in the 2022 Junior Mount Marathon race in Seward to earn Alaska Athlete of the Week co-winner honors.

Rose Conway, 14, and Coby Marvin, 15, both made remarkable improvements over one year ago to take home titles.

Conway of Anchorage used a blistering downhill, the fastest in the girl’s field, to seize the girl’s title.

She made it to the halfway point in third place among girls, 1:06 behind the leader, but blazed down the mountain and into town in 8:59, the fastest girls descent.

Conway slashed 4:05 off her 2021 time.

Marvin of Palmer used a strong ascent to gap defending champion Ali Papillon and log the second fastest time in junior race history.  Marvin’s time of 25 minutes, 27 seconds is the best performance since the legendary Bill Spencer set the junior standard of 24:30 in 1973.

Marvin lopped 3:12 off his 2021 winning time.

The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each week.
