Destiny Reimers earned Alaska Athlete of the Week honors after her standout performance helped the University of Alaska Fairbanks snap a 28-game losing streak against the University of Alaska Anchorage in the 105th all-time meeting between Alaska’s two women’s college basketball teams.

The dynamic sophomore scored a career-high 25 points to highlight a 61-56 victory at the Alaska Airlines Court, giving the Nanooks their first win in the series in 15 years, 11 months and 11 days.

Reimers – the 2020 Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year at Anchorage Christian School – was 10-of-17 shooting. She scored nine straight points in the first half and single-handedly sparked a 9-4 run to start the second half.

She was also clutch at crunch time, twice knocking down 3-pointers and then converting a layup off a feed from Paola Perez-Mendoza to give UAF the lead for good at 55-53 with 4:05 remaining.

The Nanooks last beat the Seawolves in 2007, when George W. Bush was president of the United States.

The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
