Sophomore skater Daniel Matveev was named Alaska Athlete of the Week after his outstanding playmaking led the Valley Thunder to the USA Hockey Tier II 16U 2A national championship.

Matveev, who attends Redington High and plays hockey for Houston High, turned in an outstanding performance  in Amherst, N.Y., racking up seven goals and seven assists to seize the tournament scoring title.

He assisted on the game-tying goal in Monday’s 2-1 championship win over the Jr. Sun Devils of Arizona.

The Thunder finished their title run with a 6-0-0 record.

The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
