Ketchikan’s Jason Lorig wasted no time setting the bar at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska State Track & Field Championships in Anchorage.
The junior sped into action, clocking 10.81 seconds in the 100-meter dash to edge the state record by 0.05 seconds.
While Friday’s race was a preliminary round for qualifying to the finals, Lorig made the most of the opportunity, gapping his nearest competitors by 0.26 seconds and officially adding his name to the record books.
According to ASAA, state records can only be established at the state championships.
The former state record was held by East’s Colton Herman in 2019, a multi-time state champion who went on to play football for Bemidji State. Herman also holds the state’s all-time all-conditions prep record of 10.76 seconds, while Lorig ranks No. 2.
Like Herman, Lorig’s season in the 100 is unblemished against in-state competition. He’s gone 9-for-9 and won by considerable margins.
The Kayhi sprinter is the only runner in the state this year to record a sub-11 second mark, and he’s done so on four occasions this season.
Perhaps even more impressive, his season average time of 11.04 seconds would rank second against state competition.
But on Saturday, the defending state champion will be back to business.
Racing against the clock and his competition.
