Making his first varsity start, Service High quarterback Taurian Phillip accounted for four touchdowns in Saturday’s 32-7 win over South in the annual Southside Cup game.
Just a sophomore, Phillip threw three TD passes and broke off a 58-yard scoring run to power an offense that generated 359 total yards.
The 15-year-old’s first career touchdown pass was completed to his older brother Cassidy Phillip, who plays wide receiver for the Cougars.
Also receiving consideration:
- Lars Arneson – Arneson, of Anchorage, set a new record at Veins of Gold, winning the 9-mile technical run in Palmer in 1 hour, 42 minutes and 33 seconds.
- Christian Faletoi –The West High playmaker had 12 tackles, forced a fumble and made a first-down catch in Friday’s 33-0 win over Colony. Faletoi was the leader of a fierce defensive attack that forced six turnovers held the Knights to just 150 total yards.
- Shalane Frost – the Fairbanks runner pulled off an impressive double by winning the Anchorage Mile on Saturday in 5 minutes, 5 seconds and the Humpy’s Marathon on Sunday in 2 hours, 52 minutes, 36 seconds.
- Katahdin Staples and Rosie Conway – The East High cross country runners sped to victory at the ASD North Quad Meet. Staples, a sophomore, covered the 3-kilometer race in 9 minutes, 33 seconds to outdistance his nearest competitor by 26 seconds. Conway, a junior, clocked 10:43 to outpace the field by 18 seconds.
