Bartlett High running back Makisi Poleo has lapped the Cook Inlet Conference three weeks into the high school football season and threatens to run away with the rushing title.
The 220-pound bruiser is averaging 12.9 yards per carry and has piled up 620 yards on the season, twice as many as his closest competitors heading into Week 4.
Poleo is coming off a 220-yard, two-touchdown performance against Eagle River that included sprints of 83 and 57 yards. He didn’t even play a full game, racking up only seven carries and averaging 31.4 yards per touch.
Last year, Poleo finished his junior season with 984 rushing yards. At this rate, he is on pace to reach 1,000 yards by Week 5 and could flirt with the vaunted 2K benchmark.
West’s Zephaniah Sailele ranks second in the CIC with 284 yards, although he did most of his heavy lifting in the first two weeks and was a nonfactor in Week 3 against Lathrop.
Poleo’s teammate Andre Jameson is third in the conference with 267 rushing yards, and like Poleo, Jameson is an explosive playmaker who averages 11.1 yards per carry. In last week’s 42-12 win over Eagle River, Jameson furnished 147 yards and a 71-yard score.
