West High football player Zephaniah Sailele accounted for 292 of his team’s 394 yards in a 23-16 win over the South High Wolverines.
The senior running back’s performance earned him our Alaska Athlete of the Week honors.
Sailele finished with a career-high 261 rushing yards to go with 32 receiving yards.
He also scored three touchdowns and ranks second in the Cook Inlet Conference with 790 rushing yards in six games.
Also receiving consideration:
- Shalane Frost — The Fairbanks runner recorded the fourth-fastest time in the 61-year history of the Equinox Marathon to claim Fairbanks’ premier running event for the first time.
- Allie Ostrander – The Soldotna native finished 8th at Mammoth Trail Fest 26K Sunday to climb to 21st in the world rankings and qualify for the Golden Trails World Series Final for second straight year.
- Makiski Poleo – Despite his Golden Bears dropping a 50-48 decision to East in six overtimes on Saturday, the senior bull-dozer running back carried the ball 30 times for 137 yards and four touchdowns.
- Ainsley Smith – The UAF volleyball player and North Pole High School graduate led the Nanooks to their first win against WWU in their home gym in program history behind 56 assists.
