The South High football team hit the jackpot with Cole Yarrington’s touchdown trifecta Friday night.
The senior playmaker threw for a TD, ran for a TD and returned an interception for a TD – all in the second half – to lead the Wolverines back from a two-score deficit in a 28-21 victory over Colony in the Valley.
With his team trailing 21-7 in the third quarter, Yarrington picked off a pass in the red zone and took it 89 yards to the house. The play was a 10- to 14-point swing and got South back in the game.
In the fourth quarter, he directed an 84-yard, 11-play scoring drive capped by his 19-yard toss to Isaiah Douyon over the middle to tie the game. He also hit Douyon for a 20-yard pass play on a 3rd-and-14 earlier on the drive.
South forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and made the recovery at the Colony 24-yard line. Four plays later, Yarrington raced in from 20 yards out for the go-ahead score.
The Cook Inlet Conference’s top passer threw for just 176 yards and moved seven yards of reaching the 1,500-yard benchmark for the season and connected with favorite target Landon Drumm four times, including a 66-yard bomb in the first quarter. But Colony made a goal-line stand on the drive as part of a fabulous first-half effort.

The Knights got a lift from quarterback Tyrus Fischer, the fourth player to go under center for the team this season. He threw TD passes to Ridge Spencer and Jordan Sterling on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter to put Colony ahead 14-7.
Fischer completed 9-of-11 passes for 87 yards on the two scoring drives.
Before halftime, Colony defensive back Trayvon Loft picked off Yarrington for a 43-yard interception return for a TD as the lead swelled to 21-7.
South coach John Lewis is famous for his halftime speeches, and he must have given a good one because the Wolverines clawed their way back into the game behind Yarrington.
He finished the game with two interceptions on defense, including a pick six, to go with two TDs on offense. Douyon also had two TDs, including a 4-yard run in the first quarter to get South on the board.
In addition to that, Douyon made the big defensive stop on fourth down to stop Colony’s final drive.
Trailing by a score in the final five minutes, the Knights moved the ball behind their new field general. Fischer passed for 54 yards on the final drive to get the Knights as close as the South 31-yard line, but his fourth-down pass to Spencer was snuffed out by Douyon.
