The final score offered the Seawolves no solace Friday night, and they’ve not shown interest in moral victories, either.
Who would?
The UAA hockey team tallied a late power-play goal Friday night but couldn’t again solve Colorado College’s Kaidan Mbereko in the closing seconds at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex. The Tigers’ junior netminder turned aside 28 shots as No. 9 CC held on for a 2-1 NCAA Division I victory over the Seawolves.
UAA (1-6-0) outshot the Tigers, 29-20. The teams conclude their weekend series back at the AASC tonight at 6:07.
Wearing retro 90s-era black jerseys that’ll be auctioned off to benefit the American Cancer Society, UAA more than held its own in the opening game of its second home series versus a ranked opponent. The Seawolves faced top-ranked Denver earlier in October.
Owen Beckner and Philippe Blais-Savoie scored CC power-play goals, one in the second period and another at 10 minutes, 10 seconds of the third. The Tigers went 2 for 4 with the extra attacker, while UAA failed to convert on any of its three chances.
CC improved to 3-0-0.
Seawolves graduate student Tanner Edwards, a local, scored his first goal in UAA colors at 18:15 of the third. He moved in front of Mbereko and expertly deflected Joey Potter’s shot from the point. Conor Cole earned the second assist on Edwards’ second collegiate goal.
UAA sophomore goalie Greg Orosz made 18 saves in the loss.
