This time, the Seawolves finished the job.

One day after seeing Troy roar back in the second half, the UAA women’s basketball team put together a complete effort to post a 68-52 wire-to-wire victory over Vermont in the third-place game of the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout.

Emilia Long’s 18 points led four double-figure scorers and the Seawolves hit 22-of-27 free throws to double up Vermont at the charity stripe.

UAA (6-1) also got 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting and six rebounds from junior Hedda Koehne, and 13 points from senior Jazzpher Evans. Freshman Ashlyn Rean added 10 points and joined Long on the All-Shootout Team.

“Our guards did a terrific job controlling the pace and our posts were very sharp offensively,” said UAA coach Ryan McCarthy.

This was the first meeting between the two teams as Vermont became the latest NCAA Division I team to fall to UAA, which picked up its 35th win against a different D1 opponent while improving to 41-59 all-time in the storied hoops tournament that dates back to 1980.

The Seawolves moved to 21-23 in the current four-team Shootout format that was adopted in 1999, including a 8-10 mark under McCarthy.

Long, a senior Cal Poly Humboldt transfer from Port Angeles, Wash., pumped in eight points during a pivotal 15-4 run in the second half that helped UAA stave off a Vermont comeback.

The Catamounts had pulled within 48-41 late in the third quarter, when the Seawolves put their foot down with an 11-point run that started with Long’s fastbreak bucket and ended with her knocking down two free throws. In between she had another successful trip to the free-throw line in addition to piercing through the defense for a nice layup in traffic.

Koehne, a 6-foot-1 Otero College transfer from Lette, Germany, gave the Seawolves a boost inside and matched Elaina Mack for team-high rebounding honors with six boards.

Mack, a King Cove guard and the lone homegrown Alaskan on the roster, struggled with her shooting but found other ways to contribute on defense with three steals. She also had a nice assist to Long in transition in the second quarter as UAA went up 37-27.

“Even on a day when we didn’t shoot a great percentage, we were able to steal some extra possessions and execute our game plan defensively,” McCarthy said.

The Seawolves built early leads of 20-10 and 31-19 in the first half and led 40-31 at halftime. Unlike on Friday when they saw Troy storm back from a 20-point deficit, the Alaskans stood tall in the second half on Saturday.

Guard play was exceptional for UAA. Long and Evans combined to score the final 12 points of the first half and Long (5 assists) and Jaisa Gamble (4 dimes) helped the team rack up 17 helpers on 21 field goals.

“This should give us added confidence as we enter the meat of our regular-season schedule,” McCarthy said.

The Seawolves continue their homestand with a series next weekend against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology before they tip off GNAC play the following weekend.
