A little Jazzpher Evans and Tori Hollingshead coupled with a lot of defense added up to an 80-41 victory for the UAA women’s basketball team on Friday.
Evans scored 16 and added five assists while Hollingshead hauled in 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots as the Seawolves dominated South Dakota School of Mines in a nonconference game at the Alaska Airlines Center.
Emilia Long and Jaisa Gamble each had six steals and UAA held the visitors to just two points in the second quarter.
Fresh off their third-place finish at the Great Alaska Shootout, the Seawolves came out scorching and scored 20 of the game’s first 24 points behind Evans.
The 5-foot-6 senior out of Joliet, Ill., didn’t start but finished the first quarter with nine points, with all of them coming during UAA’s 20-4 run to start the game and set the tone.
The Seawolves (7-1) came into the game averaging 24 3-point shots per game but attempted only eight from range Friday as they pounded the ball inside. Enter Hollingshead, a 6-foot-3 senior from Orem, Utah, who made 7-of-12 field goals and grabbed a game-high five offensive rebounds.
The visitors from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference got within 22-15 early in the second quarter before UAA took control from there, holding the Hardrockers scoreless until Morning Grace Spotted Bear’s layup with seven minutes left in the third quarter cut the Seawolf lead to 49-17.
UAA junior Elaina Mack of King Cove finished with eight points on the strength of 2-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.
Jaisa Gamble (San Bruno, Calif.) scored nine points, made six steals and grabbed five rebounds in 19 minutes in a strong performance off the bench.
The teams will conclude their two-game series Saturday at 3 p.m.
