The Dimond Volleyball team earned our Alaska Athlete of the Week honors after winning four consecutive elimination matches before beating Colony 30-20 in an if-necessary super set to claim the Class 4A state championship at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Lynx also beat Colony in five hard-fought sets to force the if-necessary game after topping Chugiak in five close sets to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament.
Dimond played 26 sets across the three-day tournament, including 11 on Saturday.
Also receiving votes:
- Stacie Meisner – The UAA volleyball coach guided the Seawolves to a pair of GNAC wins over the weekend, securing her first 20-win season as head coach.
- Daishen Nix – The G League guard out of Anchorage pumped in 26 points against the Texas Legends to give him 1,681 for his career as he broke Ramon Harris’ all-time Alaska scoring record in the G League.
- Sayvia Sellers – The University of Washington guard out of Anchorage scored 14 of her 30 points in the second quarter to highlight a 72-61 Big Ten win at Utah.
- Ava Earl – The standout from Girdwood conquered the 6-kilometer course at the Midwest Regional in Stillwater, Okla., in 20 minutes, 46 seconds to place 15th individually, helping Northwestern punch its ticket to the NCAA Division 1 cross country championships for just the fourth time in program history.
- Jeremy Swayman – The Boston Bruins goaltender and former South Anchorage Wolverine has surrendered only 12 goals on 156 shots during his five-game winning streak, and most recently made 26 saves in Saturday’s win over the Montreal Canadiens.
