Parker’s gamble pays off in junior college as defensive back from Fairbanks signs with Utah

Junior college isn’t for everyone. It’s an arduous route, which demands sacrifice and tests a player’s love for the game, no matter the sport.

Fairbanks football standout Earl Parker threw himself into the fire after graduating from Lathrop High School and picked one of the most prestigious JUCO programs in the country. He redshirted his first season and then barely played as a freshman in 2024, when Hutchinson won the NJCAA Division I national championship. The hardware was nice, but Parker didn’t have much else to show for his first two years.

“It was rough,” Parker said recently. “I had to get adjusted to being far from home and starting over and actually learning the game of football. But I just kept going and keeping my faith.”

Trusting the process paid off because he’s headed to the Big 12.

The three-star defensive back considered leaving Hutchison after his freshman season but came back, rising to the top of the depth chart and helping Hutchinson (11-1) get back to the national title game. Parker played in 11 games, racking up 28 tackles, two pass breakups and one interception.

He proved his chops on the field and drew interest from more than 20 NCAA Division I programs before picking the University of Utah over Houston and Memphis.

“In my heart it felt like home when I got there,” he said of his official visit to Salt Lake City. “I liked the type of people they were outside of football, the culture, the bonds the coaches had together. All of it. I’m excited.”

Parker prides himself on being a sticky defensive back in man coverage, something that makes or breaks a player at that skill position.

At 6-foot-2, he matches up well against tall wide receivers and is quick enough to shadow smaller wideouts. He’s also a physical player who can be relied on to make tackles in the open field.

“I’m a guy who can make plays on the ball,” Parker said.

In 2022, as a Lathrop senior, Parker was a star receiver and defensive back. As a wideout, he caught 32 passes for 690 and 13 touchdowns. He shares the state record with five TD receptions in a game and his 13 TDs are tied for the sixth-highest total in Alaska high school history.

Going from Fairbanks to a JUCO power in Hutchinson, Kan., was a difficult transition, in large part, because people on campus pre-judged him based on his area code.

“It’s hard to be taken seriously as a football athlete because of being from Alaska,” Parker said. “You have to work harder than hard and earn your stripes.”

Slowly but surely, he rose the ranks until he was captain defense. His coaches at Hutchison never lost confidence in him, and neither did Parker. He continued to grind, working his way up the depth chart and eventually earning more snaps.

“I always knew my time was going to come,” Parker said. “After the spring I picked up my first Division 1 offer, and I was deciding on leaving but my coaches told me to come back for my third season and I was going to get bigger offers, so I trusted his word and came back.”

And now he’s headed to the Big 12.

It’s been a long journey for Parker, who said he couldn’t have done it without the people in Alaska having his back.

“Throughout my whole journey my community has supported me and that’s why I will always represent my city and state,” he said.
