Barrow boys basketball player Alex Fruean was voted our Alaska Athlete of the Week after averaging 33 points in three games at the Class 3A state tournament, highlighted by a career-high 46 points in a 98-97 triple-OT loss to Mt. Edgecumbe in the title game.
The junior point forward put up 37 points on Nome to headline a 63-50 victory in the semifinals.
He showcased his dynamic skillset throughout the tournament with an array of dunks, long-range three-pointers, and precision no-look passes.
Fruean also stood out for his sportsmanship, frequently helping players from the other team off the floor and leading his team in the handshake line after a heartbreaking loss in the championship game.
- Luc Bydal – The first-year Anchorage Wolverines forward from Grand Forks, N.D., scored twice in Saturday’s 5-1 North American Hockey League home victory over Kenai River.
- Mark DeArmond – The sprinter from Wasilla was magnificent at the Marauders Outdoor Opener. The U-Mary sophomore won both the 100 (10.70) and 200 (21.65) with times that rank him third and fifth all-time in AK history.
- Keelie Kronberger – The Mountain City senior and Division I Oral Roberts signee scored 84 points in three March Madness Alaska games to lead the Lions to the 4A girls state championship.
- Jessie Holmes – The musher from Brushkana won the 54th Iditarod in 9 days, 7 hours, 32 minutes and 51 seconds to defend his title.
- David Norris and Klaire Rhodes – Norris and Rhodes made it an Alaska sweep at the Big Alta 50K, despite scorching temperatures. The 31.2-mile course featured approximately 6,700 feet of elevation gain and loss.
- Sayvia Sellers – The UW basketball player from Anchorage averaged nine assists in two games at the NCAA Tournament. She matched her career-high with 10 assists in a 72-54 win over South Dakota State – the most by an Alaskan in the big dance.
- Jeremy Swayman – The sixth-year Boston Bruins goaltender made 41 saves in a pivotal 4-2 road victory over the Detroit Red Wings. He sits at 28-14-4 with a 2.71 goals-against average and .907 save percentage.
