Kendall Kramer was named our Alaska Athlete of the Week after enjoying a huge breakthrough Sunday in Falun, Sweden, where she more than held her own against some of the best in the world.
The cross-country skier from Fairbanks grabbed ninth place in the 20-kilometer skiathlon for the first top-10 World Cup finish of her career.
The 23-year-old West Valley and UAF grad had been in the top 20 only once before — 18th in a 10K freestyle race a year ago — and placed 48th in her skiathlon debut earlier this season.
Kramer was in the top 10 for most of the race, which started with 10 kilometers of classic skiing and ended with 10 kilometers of skating. She was about 10 seconds behind the leaders halfway through the race.
- Sam Evert –The Anchorage Wolverines forward scored two goals in both Friday’s 6-4 victory and Saturday’s 4-2 win against the Chippewa Steel. at Sullivan Arena. He twice tallied the game-winning goal as well.
- Elaina Mack – The King Cove native finished her women’s basketball career at the University of Alaska Anchorage with 237 3-pointers, just two shy of the school record.
- Brayden Maldonado – The basketball player from Anchorage scored a career-high 33 points, powering D1 Seattle University men’s basketball to a 71-66 win at Loyola Marymount Saturday.
- Allie Ostrander – The runner from Soldotna placed eighth against a strong field at the US Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta. The 29-year-old professional runner finished in 1 hour, 11 minutes and 26 seconds — an average pace of 5:27 per mile.
- Bella Shelley – The Colony girls basketball player hit the winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to supply a 53-51 win over Mountain City Christian Academy.
- Moses Tukrook – The Kali boys basketball player pumped in a career-high 55 points in a victory over Alak in the North Slope Conference Tournament. More impressive is the fact Tukrook is just in eighth grade, called up to varsity for the short-handed team.
- Calvin Vachon – UAF’s freshman goaltender from Redondo Beach, Calif., made 22 saves and blanked UAA 2-0 on Friday in Fairbanks.
- Emily Walsh – The Cedarville graduate student from Eagle River won the mile at the G-MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in 4 minutes, 52.79 seconds.
