Riley Howard was voted our Alaska Athlete of the Week after putting on a clinic at the 130th Boston Marathon.
The 28-year-old Service High graduate sped to a jaw-dropping time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 37 seconds to place 49th.
His effort qualifies him for the prestigious U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials — the first Alaskan to do so in seven years.
Howard’s marathon time also ranks third all-time in Alaska history.
- Royce Borst – The Skagway high school senior set the Ketchikan Invitational meet record with a high jump of 6-02.00. His mark is a boys’ state best this season.
- Chugiak Track Team – The Mustangs had a historic weekend at the Liberty Bell Invitational in Littleton, Colo., winning the boys team title by one point, while the girls team tied for sixth out of 48 teams.
- Taylor Cushing – The Sitka High senior won the girls’ triple jump at the Ketchikan Invitational with a state-leading distance of 35 feet, 9 inches.
- Mary Jo Landon – The Chugiak senior girls soccer player notched five goals and two assists against East to power a 9-0 victory. Landon now has 21 goals on the season and needs three more to reach 50 for her career.
- Ariela Lewis – The former All-CIC forward out of Dimond scored four goals for Keflavik in the 8-3 win over KT Reykjavik in the Icelandic Cup. It was a dream start for Lewis, who scored twice in the first six minutes and had a hat trick by the 49th minute.
- Isaiah Moses – Making his pro hoops debut, the Anchorage playmaker pumped in 32 points on 12-of-22 shooting to lead the Perry Lakes Hawks to a 100-98 victory over East Perth in the NBL1.
- Florian Wade – The Anchorage goaltender led the junior hockey Rochester to the second round of the NAHL Robertson Cup playoffs, finishing the five-game series with a 2.43 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and a 30-save shutout in Game 4.
