Wasilla’s Emma Morrissey capped her junior season of college softball with the ultimate experience of winning a championship.
The University of Northwestern defeated Southwestern Christian 4-1 in the title game of the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series in Grapeville, Texas on Wednesday.
Seeded sixth among the eight teams in the field, the Eagles finished 4-1 in the double-elimination tournament with victories over No. 1 Columbia International, No. 2 SW Christian and No. 3 Arlington Baptist.
Morrissey, of Colony High fame, made two appearances in the circle. She started in a 9-3 win over SW Christian on Day 1 and then came on in relief in a 3-0 loss to Wayland Baptist.
As a starter, she scattered six hits and one walk while striking out two batters in four innings. In relief, she retired all four batters she faced on three grounders and a strikeout.
Morrissey (6-1) finished the season with a 2.57 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 51.2 innings.
The Alaskan also started 19 of 36 games in the outfield and banged out four hits in 23 at-bats with a triple and two RBIs. She’s a career .273 hitter in 55 games.
Northwestern finished the season 33-16.
