Allie Ostrander placed fifth at the U.S. Road 5K Championships in Indianapolis, clocking 15 minutes, 16.47 seconds.
The 29-year-old professional runner from Kenai recorded her fastest 5K time on the roads and neared her all-time best, averaging a blistering pace of 4:54 per mile.
Comparison can be a thief of joy, but for Ostrander, the race symbolized a milestone beyond the championships.
“The last time I ran this fast in a 5K was 8 years ago,” shared Ostrander on Instagram, referring to her 15:16.38 personal best set indoors at Boston University in 2018. The feat is particularly impressive, considering track 5K times are generally 15-20 seconds faster than on the roads.
Ostrander finished 18 ticks behind the winner, two-time Olympian Karissa Schweizer of Oregon, who clocked 14:58.38. Indiana’s Emma Grace Hurley finished runner-up in 15:00.79.
The race doubled as a qualifying event for Team USA, as the top-2 punched their tickets to the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Denmark this September.
Ostrander collected $1,000 for placing fifth, out of 25 athletes. It also marks her highest finish in a US Championships — on the roads or track — since 2019.
Ostrander, who ran collegiately for Boise State from 2015-19, earned three NCAA titles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase before going pro. And while she often conquered the competition, Ostrander’s main battle was against herself, eventually admitting herself to a partial hospitalization for eating disorder recovery in 2021.
“I spent so many years of my life carefully controlling everything I ate, convinced that restriction was an important part of training,” said Ostrander. “It took a lot of trust and faith (and therapy lol) to flip that belief.”
Now in her seventh year as a professional athlete, her patience and careful reconstruction have paid dividends.
Since January, the Oiselle-sponsored athlete has lowered her own Alaska record at the Houston Half Marathon (1:10:08), placed eighth at the US Half Marathon Championships (1:11:26), won the Statesman Cap10K in a course record (32:45) and sped to sixth at the US Road Mile Championships (4:30).
With a fifth-place showing at the U.S. Road 5K Championships, Ostrander is finding her stride again at the professional level, this time with an unbridled passion for the sport.
“I’m finally in a place where I can confidently say that no past version of myself would beat me now. I have never felt stronger or enjoyed racing more. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I know with certainty that I’m on the right path.”
