They’ve got new personnel, but the Wolverines looked a lot like the old South flag football team on Saturday as the quarterback tossed a couple touchdown passes and the defense kept Service off the scoreboard.

New faces such as Avery Steadman and Darby D’Amico on offense, and Kennedy Bush, Elliana Smith and Taylor Fisk on defense have taken the torch to extend the team’s eight-game winning streak dating back to last season after beating the Cougars 20-0 at East High School.

Steadman has taken over quarterback duties and threw two TDs to D’Amico, who doubled as a divine defensive back and added a pick six in the third quarter for her third TD of the day.

Bush and Smith combined for five sacks and Fisk hauled in two of her team’s four interceptions for a South defense that shut out Service for the fourth straight time in the series.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolverines (2-0) hit paydirt 97 seconds into the second after D’Amico took a short screen pass from Steadman and sprinted 58 yards down the right sideline.

Later in the quarter, South punter Shayla Lee pinned the Cougars at the 8-yard line. The drive stalled at the 22 after Service went for it on fourth down but came up short after the receiver juggled and then dropped the pass.

Two plays later, Steadman showed a steady hand by throwing a nice ball to a wide-open D’Amico for a walk-in TD to make it 13-0.

Steadman finished 9-for-14 passing for 130 yards, with 86 going to D’Amico. Backup quarterback Emma Boin played the fourth quarter.

Service (0-1) moved the ball well behind quarterback Sialeia Silva, who combined for 169 total offense and helped the Cougars outgain South 224-218.

Silva’s passing and running by Mari Spires helped Service move the ball into South territory on its first possession of the second half, but D’Amico jumped a route for a 65-yard pick six that made it 20-0 after the conversion.

That was a 14-point swing and essentially put the game away.

South’s defense forced four turnovers and got three sacks from Bush and two more by Smith. The defensive line kept constant pressure on Silva, forcing her into 12-for-23 passing.

Her favorite target was Karlierose Lealaisalanoa, who made five receptions for 59 yards.
