American Legion baseball player Jayden Stuyvesant put together a historic performance in leading the Kenai Twins to the legion state championship, earning him our Alaska Athlete of the Week honors.
The first baseman batted .667 and tied the tournament record with 15 RBIs and three doubles in one game. He also closed out the title game and sealed the win on the mound in the final frame.
Stuyvesant’s hitting and pitching provided the ultimate bookends for the Twins at the 74th Alaska Legion state tournament.
He knocked in the first run in the first game and then capped his MVP performance by picking up the save in the fifth and final game to lead Kenai to its first state title since 2016.
- Emilee Anderson – The recent South High graduate earned All-American honors in the discus at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships. The reigning state champion launched the discus to a mark of 133 feet, 3 inches, placing seventh in the 17-18 year old division.
- Michael Murray – The15-year-old runner from Palmer registered an impressive 3rd place finish in the Mat Peak Challenge mountain race Saturday. A rising sophomore at Colony High, Murray recently competed at the North and Central American Youth Skyrunning Championships as youngest American in the U21 category.
- Shauna Severson – The 39-year-old runner from Eagle River set a new women’s record in the Mat Peak Challenge, logging a time of 3:15:44 on the grueling course that includes 9,100 feet of vertical gain and descent over 14-miles.
