It used to be that being a triple-threat on the high school football field was enough to get people talking.

But Kenai Central newcomer Snowdon Bear Williams took versatility to a new level in last week’s 68-18 win over Redington at Ed Hollier Field on the Peninsula.

Williams piled up 237 all-purpose yards and is believed to be the first Alaska player to score five touchdowns five different ways – pick six, rushing, receiving, kick return and punt return.

The 6-foot-1 senior transferred to Kenai this year from Spring Creek, Nev., where he starred for the Spartans as a wide receiver with 70 catches for 1,060 yards and 12 TDs across his junior and sophomore seasons.

Last season in Nevada, Williams averaged 19.3 yards per reception and scored nine TDs in 11 gamers. A solid return man, he averaged 20.1 yards on 31 attempts. That number was buoyed by his 24.6 clip as a junior that included an 85-yard TD return to kick off a 42-0 win over Lowry on Oct. 3.

That’s exactly what he did against Redington, taking the opening kickoff back 85 yards on his way to making Alaska history.

Williams has been impressive from the jump. In his Kenai debut, he scored a TD the first time he touched the ball, but the play was called back due to a penalty. On the next play, Williams caught a pass from quarterback Garrett McCanna and took it to the house.

Hall-mark performance

On the eve of facing the No. 1-ranked team from Wyoming, Soldotna’s Chase Hall didn’t get caught looking ahead.

The returning 1,000-yard rusher back delivered a career-best performance in a 49-19 win over West Valley with 193 yards and six TDs. The senior all-state fullback averaged 13.8 yards per carry and broke off a long of 43 yards.

In Week 1, he missed the century mark by one yard. In Week 2, he flirted with the 200-yard mark.

On Saturday, Soldotna will host Star Valley, which brings a 33-game winning streak to town.

Balash is ballin’

Standing 6-1 and weighing 180 pounds, Boaz Balash doesn’t look like a sophomore.

He doesn’t play like one either.

The Lathrop quarterback has thrown for more than 400 yards in his first two starts and furnished a .686 completion percentage along with a 9-to-2 TD to INT ratio. More importantly, the Malemutes are 2-0.

Last week, Balash completed 7-of-11 passes for 145 yards and four TDs in a 42-0 victory over Eagle River. He posted a 146.8 QB rating; for reference, a perfect rating in the NFL is 158.

Here’s a look at other Alaska Division II standouts from Week 2.

• Chiron Cross, Seward: The sophomore running back went off for 211 yards and four TDs in a 48-12 win over Nikiski. Cross averaged 8.8 yards per carry and broke off a long of 57.
• Boe McCarthy, Kodiak: The junior quarterback threw for 268 yards and three TDs, and posted a .727 completion percentage in a 40-12 win over Monroe Catholic.
• Titus Lance, Palmer: The junior running back rushed for 179 yards and four TDs in a 32-26 win over North Pole. Lance is averaging 14.6 yards per carry on 18 attempts.
• Gunnar Stanley, Kenai: The senior running back sprinted for 170 yards and a TD in a 48-18 win over Redington. He averaged 10 yards per carry.
• Trevin Moore, Soldotna: The junior kicker split the uprights from 30 yards for his first field goal of the season. He also banged home four of six PATs, giving him a 75% success rate on 12 attempts in two games.
• Jake Sanford, Kodiak: The sophomore wideout made eight receptions for 139 yards in a 40-12 win over Monroe Catholic and is averaging 20.8 yards per catch in two games.
• Brandon Wadleigh, Wasilla: The halfback rushed for 201 yards on 21 carries with a pair of touchdowns in a 35-15 victory over Chugiak, giving the Warriors their first conference win since 2023.
