When it comes to trick plays, the timing of the call and its execution have to be flawless.

Colony football coach Nathan Dahl on Saturday reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out the hook-and-ladder, which the Knights executed to perfection in double overtime to highlight a 36-29 victory at East Anchorage High School.

On 3rd-and-goal from the 20, Kai Anderson-Berghoff caught a short pass and then flipped to Jackson Forsyth, who raced 13 yards to the end zone and beat the defense by diving for the pylon.

After scoring the go-ahead touchdown, the Colony defense knocked down two East passes near the goal line to ice the win and move to 3-0 in the Cook Inlet Conference.

Anderson-Berghoff was huge for the offense as the sophomore wideout hauled in nine receptions for 104 yards and served as a security blanket for quarterback Trayvon Lott. The Colony playmakers hooked up for a pair of TDs in addition to a pair of fourth-down completions on top of having a hand in the go-ahead score in double OT.

Five of Lott’s first six completions went to Anderson-Berghoff, including scoring strikes of 27 and 14 yards, as the Knights jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

East finally got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter after cashing in on a 16-play, 79-yard drive that was topped off by quarterback Kiona Toa’s 5-yard pass to wideout Niko Standifer. Starting signal caller Travis Motoa engineered the team’s first 15 plays but on 4th-and-1, T-birds coach Jeff Trotter went with Toa under center.

Toa is the best backup in the CIC and would start for some teams. Quick and mobile, he’s a run-first QB but can throw it, too, and showed that with a TD toss after rolling out to his right.

Early in the third quarter, Toa struck again, this time on the ground after Motoa got rocked on a sack and limped off the field. On the very next play, Toa broke off a 31-yard TD run after zigzagging through the defense virtually untouched to pull East within 14-12.

On the ensuing kickoff, however, Colony’s Hudson Broeder made a 98-yard house call after he hit the hole, evaded a tackler, deked a defender and broke another tackle at the 30 on his way to the end zone to put the Valley boys back in front by double digits.

Two snaps, two TDs. Big plays were on the menu, and both teams were hungry for more.

On East’s next play from scrimmage, Colony defensive back Kenneth Hopkins III grabbed an interception. Three plays later, though, East linebacker Devoh Peseti recovered a fumble and scampered 65 yards down the left sideline for a scoop and score. On that play, Colony’s pass behind the line of scrimmage was a lateral that fell to the turf. The Colony player assumed it was an incomplete pass and Peseti picked the live ball and outraced the Colony player to the end zone.

Seven minutes later, East scored a safety after forcing Lott out of bounds as he tried to elude pressure.

Early in the fourth quarter, the T-birds got another big interception, this time from Myles Reyes, who stepped in front of a Colony receiver at the 30 and returned the pick to the 5. On the next play, Motoa, who by this time had returned under center, sprinted for a TD and added a two-point conversion to put East ahead 29-22 with 8:59 to play.

The Knights tied things up 29-29 after marching 82 yards on 13 plays capped by Lott’s 1-run dive with 35 seconds left. Lott was instrumental on the drive, accounting for 44 yards through the air and hooking up with Forsyth on a 17-yard pass play that put the Knights on the doorstep. Lott also drew the East defense offsides on 4th-and-3.

Neither team scored in the first OT. East’s drive was doomed by an intentional grounding penalty, while Colony’s drive was stopped by Peseti’s interception.

In the second overtime, Colony was called for holding to push the ball back to the 20. Then Lott threw an incompletion before the hook-and-ladder play put the Knights in front.

With the win, Colony cut into East’s 10-6 lead in the all-time series with the T-birds dating back to 2001. The teams have split their last six meetings.
