Whitney Williams

Whitney Williams of Anchorage collect her sixth career doubles title with the Abilene Christian University women’s tennis team in Dallas, Texas.

Maybe more importantly, though, she moved closer to a coveted record among Alaska players.

With 116 career victories, Williams is now within single digits of matching the state record of 125 set by Anchorage’s Emma Lewis at Bowdoin College.

Both players are of South High fame.

Williams and partner Lucile Pothier claimed the No. 1 doubles title with a 6-4 win over a Louisiana Monroe team in the finals at Metroplex Mania at the SMU Tennis Complex.

Williams lost both matches at No. 2 singles, including a three-setter in an elimination match.

She made up for it in doubles, where the Abilene Christian duo defeated three talented teams.

The Georgia State team they beat 6-1 featured an All-Sun Belt performer. The team from SMU they beat 7-5 featured one All-Big 12 player and another All-MAC player. And the team they beat from Louisiana Monroe qualified for the NCAA Championships last season.
