Mia ‘Uhila

No adjustment period needed for Anchorage’s Mia ‘Uhila, who stormed out of the gates in her college basketball debut.

The Portland State University freshman highlighted her team’s 2-0 start with practically perfect point guard play.

If it wasn’t her nine assists. It was her six steals. Or the way she took care of the ball.

‘Uhila’s 4.5-to-1 assist to turnover ratio is tied for No. 1 in the Big Sky Conference. She also leads the conference in steals and is tied for second in assists.

Not bad for a true freshman coming off the bench in her first taste against college competition.

‘Uhila, of Bartlett High fame, had six points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals in just 18 minutes against Warner Pacific. Three days later against Dixie State she produced four points, two rebounds, five assists and four steals in 24 minutes.

The reigning Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year has always played with a fearless spirit on the court.

Now the rest of the country is catching a glimpse of her winning style.
