Mia ‘Uhila

Whenever she plays an opposing team with a fellow Alaskan, Anchorage’s Mia ‘Uhila shows out.

And shows off.

The Portland State University freshman matched her season high with nine points in a 75-71 win over Pepperdine, which features Juneau’s Kendyl Carson, who did not play.

The last time she had nine points came Nov. 21 against Hawaii, which includes starting guard Olivia Davies of Wasilla.

‘Uhila, of Bartlett High fame, is averaging 5.5 points in 22.4 minutes per game as her team’s first option off the bench.

In tonight’s game against Pepperdine, ‘Uhila made several key plays down the stretch to help Portland State snap a four-game losing streak.

With her team nursing a 64-63 cushion, she stole the ball at the 2:36 mark. Sixteen seconds later she converted a layup to push Portland State’s advantage to 66-63. With 23 seconds left, she iced the win with a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game at 73-69.

The 5-foot-8 guard was last season’s Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year.
