Sayvia Sellers and Zach Williamson of Anchorage share Alaska Athlete of the Week honors after their shining performances at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska state basketball tournament.
Both Sellers and Williamson led their respective teams to state championships. One made sure a streak continued, one made sure a streak ended.
Williamson, the floor leader of the South High boys basketball team, hit a dramatic game-winning shot at the buzzer in the Class 4A state final to lift the Wolverines to a 37-35 win that snapped East High School’s 52-game unbeaten streak against Alaska competition.
This was South’s first state title since 2008.
The do-it-all 6-foot-4 senior point guard also came up big as a lock-down defender who held the opposing teams’ top player in check throughout the tournament.
The most dominant player of her era, Sayvia Sellers led the Anchorage Christian girls basketball team to a state championship in its first season at the Class 4A level as the Lady Lions ran its in-state winning streak to 98.
The 5-foot-7 guard scored 22 points and dished off nine assists in the title game as the Lions beat Wasilla 71-42.
Sellers, a junior, averaged 20.7 points and 9.0 assists in three state tournament games.
The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
