Spencer Woods of Shungnak was named our Alaska Athlete of the Week after winning his second major wrestling title this year and earning a spot on Team USA’s World Championship team.
With the 2024 Olympics looming, the Kotzebue High grad took the 82-kg crown Saturday night at Final X in Newark, NJ.
He beat Ryan Epps in a three-match duel, taking a 3-3 criteria decision in the first match, losing 9-0 in the second, and prevailing 5-0 in the third.
Earlier this spring, Woods won a US Open title and a gold medal at the Pan Am Games. Woods is part of the Army World Class Athlete Program and was a member of the 2022 Worlds team.
The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
