Legion baseball pitcher Liam Lierman is the Alaska Athlete of the Week after throwing the first no-hitter at the state tournament in 31 years.

Lierman tossed the first no-hitter since 1992 at the state American Legion baseball tournament and scored the only run as Eagle River beat Service Post 28 1-0 for its third straight championship.

Lierman, a lefty entering his junior year of high school, silenced a Service lineup that had been hitting .362 in the tournament entering the final game. He threw 94 pitches, struck out six and scored the only run on a passed ball after drawing a leadoff walk at Mulcahy Stadium.

Other finalists included Greco-Roman wrestler Elyle Francisco, swimmer Lydia Jacoby, cyclist Eric Flanders and triathletes Mackie Derrick and Pam Schamber.

The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
