Jordyn Bruce of Eagle River was selected as our Alaska Athlete of the Week after placing runner-up in the inaugural edition of the women’s indoor heptathlon held in France.
Bruce and set an unofficial American heptathlon record with a total of 5,226 points. Her performance is classified as an unofficial since World Athletics has yet to ratify the event.
The former Eagle River High and Illinois State standout also reached the highest known mark by an Alaskan in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, 6.25 inches during the event.
With her indoor season concluded, the multi-event athlete opens her outdoor season in March and will attempt to earn a bid for the Olympic Trials for the heptathlon this summer.

- Evan Fitzgerald – The West High hockey senior defenseman logged three goals and two assists over three tournament games to help lead the Eagles to their fifth state title.
- Vebjorn Flagstad – The South High sophomore turned in a dominating individual performance at the Region IV Nordic Ski Championships, winning both the classic and freestyle events in decisive fashion and being named Region Skimeister.
- Murphy Kimball — The 17-year-old West High School senior became what is believed to be the youngest American man to compete in a World Cup race. Kimball raced in Saturday’s qualifying round of a World Cup freestyle sprint race in Canmore.
- Sullivan Menard – The Whitworth University basketball player from Palmer pumped in a career-high 39 points and 12 rebounds in a 94-81 victory over George Fox in Division III action. He also matched a career-high with seven 3-pointers.
- Akeem Sulaiman – The East basketball player scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half, including eight in the fourth quarter when the T-birds put their foot down in a 57-40 win over visiting Service to move to 8-0 in the Cook Inlet Conference.
- Mac Swanson – The Fargo Force forward from Anchorage on Friday scored a hat trick and added four assists to tie a franchise record with seven points in a game. Swanson recorded the first seven-point USHL game in nearly four years.
