Track star Allie Ostrander of Soldotna logged a big win in the steeplechase to be named our Alaska Athlete of the Week
The 27-year-old Kenai Central grad chopped 2.26 seconds of her personal best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to win the Portland Track Festival on Friday in 9 minutes, 24.70 seconds. That made her the eighth-fastest American woman in the event this year and the 22nd-fastest in the world, according to World Athletics.
Ostrander closed the victory with a 72-second final lap that was four seconds faster than any other racer in the field.
Ostrander, an Alaska Sports Hall of Fame inductee this year, will next race at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on June 24.
She finished eighth in the steeplechase at the 2021 Trials. Earlier this year, she finished fourth at the U.S. Cross Country Championships and 30th at the World Championships.
She is a three-time NCAA steeple champ and raced the steeple at the 2019 World Championships.
