Palmer’s Coby Marvin was marvelous once again in Seward as he won the Mount Marathon juniors race for the third straight year.
Marvin was the first racer at the halfway point, and he was the first to cross the finish line in Thursday’s juniors race, which included 300 boys and girls who ran together but were separated in the results.
Marvin finished in 25 minutes and 47 seconds, five seconds ahead of Vebjørn Flagstad of Anchorage in a repeat of last year’s result.
Flagstad was right behind Marvin almost every step of the way, trailing by two seconds at the turnaround and then closing on the home stretch along Seward’s famed 4th Avenue.
Third-place finisher Cedar Ruckel of Indian crossed in 28:22 despite taking a nasty face-first fall on a rocky descent. Ruckel held off Wasilla’s Blaze Rubeo by two seconds.
Rubeo posted the fastest downhill time of 7:40 – a 95-second improvement from last year.
