But you can’t teach chemistry.
Luckily for Williams that part comes easy.
Armed with a new doubles partner, the 20-year-old Alaskan prevailed in all three matches and to win the top flight doubles division at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado.
“I was nervous to play with Lucile Pothier because we had never played with each other before, but we had good chemistry together,” Williams told me. “Before every point we’d come together and make a plan of what we are going to do so that really helps.”
Williams and Pothier outscored opponents form North Carolina, Texas State and Air Force in 18 of 23 games.
“Right now I feel like I am playing well all around with my service, ground strokes and my net play,” Williams said. “I have learned a lot about tennis in one year of college tennis and now I just need to execute what I have learned and get faster and stronger to take care of business on the court.”
Williams, of South High fame, was a Second Team All-Southland Conference pick in doubles last year with Erin Walker. The pair went 7-1 in league.
She has a new partner, but the same mind set.
“I need to keep improving with my consistency and being able to produce deep and heavy balls to open up the court,” she said. “I have improved in my game as a while but you can never stop learning about the game.”
