Abilene Christian University tennis player Whitney Williams of Anchorage has earned first team Southland Conference honors in singles and honorable mention in doubles.

The sophomore was voted the best No. 5 singles player in the NCAA D1 conference after posting a 17-2 record. Overall she is 19-5 and currently riding a 13-match winning streak.

Williams, of South High fame, started her streak March 4 at home against Temple and kept it going through Southland Conference play, with six of her 11 league wins coming in three sets.

The highlight came against Charoline Erlandsson of McNeese when she lost the first set 6-3 and trailed 5-2 in the second before rallying for the win, thanks to winning 11 of the final 13 games.

Williams would be pushed to a third set four additional times over the next two weeks, but came out on top each occasion in beating opposition from Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Central Arkansas.

Williams and doubles partner Erin Walker received honorable mention recognition for their play at No. 1 doubles.

They posted an overall record of 17-8, which included a 7-3 mark against league opposition, and a 14-7 record when competing together at No. 1.

They made second team all-conference in 2015 while competing at No. 2 doubles.
