The 17th no-hitter in Cook Inlet Conference baseball history was all about brotherly love.
South High brothers David and Daniel Feigner threw a combined no-hitter in Wednesday’s 6-1 win over Eagle River in a non-league game at Bartlett High School.
David, a sophomore right-hander, started and pitched 5.2 innings before giving way to Daniel, a senior righty, to close out the final 1.1 innings. They combined for 10 strikeouts in seven innings and got web gems from second baseman Trevor Maltby and catcher Kolby Jensen as the defending state champion Wolverines improved to 9-1 on the season.
“Daniel and David, they are pretty consistent,” said South coach Taylor Nerland. “They did a really good job of mixing off-speed pitches and there were a couple great plays in the field, too.”
Eagle River didn’t get a hit, but the Wolves (5-3) had plenty of baserunners as they drew eight walks, including three by Dallin Roberts and two by Gunner Mountcastle. Three walks and a wild pitch produced Eagle River’s lone run in the sixth inning.
The Feigner bros managed a 1-2-3 inning only twice, so credit them for working out of trouble. David left a runner in scoring position in the first, second and fourth innings while Daniel stranded two in the sixth.
Maltby made two nice plays with his glove and was part of a 4-6-3 double play in the seventh inning. He took away a hit with a great play up the middle.
“Some days that’s a hit, today it was an out,” Nerland said. “Even the umpire said he was surprised he got to that ball.”
Jensen erased two baserunners from behind the plate, including one at third after Eagle River used a walk and sac bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Jensen also contributed with his bat, going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs while Blake Peterson homered and knocked in a pair of runs.
But this day belonged to the Feigners, who became the first brothers in CIC history to throw a combined a no-no.
CIC COMBO NO-NOs
2001 – Corey Madden & Erik Thompson, East vs. Wasilla
2019 – Patrick Leshan & Erik White, East vs. Bartlett
2024 – David Feigner & Daniel Feigner, South vs. Eagle River
The Feigner bros also have the distinction of throwing the most pitches (126) among the 17 no-hitters in league history dating back to 1992. David threw 96 pitches, 52 for strikes. Daniel threw 39 pitches, 19 for strikes.
With no scoreboard at the Bartlett baseball field, the South dugout wasn’t aware of the no-hitter until going to the bullpen with two on and two down in the sixth inning.
“When we took him out, we weren’t thinking about it at that point,” Nerland said. “I don’t think anybody knew until he came out.”
The previous mark for most pitches in a CIC no-hitter was 115 set in 2001 by East’s Corey Madden and Erik Thompson, who combined for 18 Ks against Wasilla. Chugiak’s Camden Costanios threw 114 pitches in his 2019 no-no.
Other South pitchers with no-hitters are Alex Schlegal in 2015, Jonny Homza in 2016 and Curtis Hebert in 2023.
