Whitney Williams

An old foe prevented Anchorage’s Whitney Williams from claiming a title at one of the oldest events in college tennis.

Williams and her Abilene Christian University doubles partner Erin Walker dropped a dramatic 8-7 defeat to teammates Kaysie Hermsdorf and Lucile Pothier in the women’s doubles championship at the 116th annual Ojai Valley Tournament in California.

Williams, of South High fame, was denied her 43rd win of the season.

The sophomore will settle for a career-high 42 wins – 21 in singles, 21 in doubles.

Williams won 15 consecutive singles matches before dropping her final match of the season in three sets.

She had been 6-0 in three-set matches up to that point.

One of the few Alaskans playing tennis at the NCAA D1 level, Williams was voted first team in singles and honorable mention in doubles for the Southland Conference.
