Alaska women have a habit of winning NCAA D2 championships in rowing at Western Washington University.
The new 907 crew hopes to keep the tradition alive.
Anchorage’s Angie Dexter and Rachael Schick, North Pole’s Kory Shaw and Bethel’s Brenna Rice are part of the No. 3-ranked Vikings rowing program.
Dexter, of West High fame, is part on WWU’s No. 1 eight-oared boat.
Rachael Schick
The 5-foot-10 junior sits in the stroke position, which is closest to the stern.
Last year, Dexter earned D2 Academic All-District 8 honors as a result of her cumulative 3.91 grade point average while pursuing a degree in Spanish.
Schick, of East High fame, is part on WWU’s No. 1 four-oared boat.
The 5-foot-7 sophomore sits in the No. 3 spot near the bow.
Kory Shaw
Both Dexter and Schick were both in action when Western Washington traveled to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for the Central Sprints.
The Vikings finished third in both the eight and the four, using borrowed shells in each race as the team opted not to take its boats more than 2,000 miles.
The event featured 12 of the past 14 national champions, including eight-time national champion Western Washington (2005-11, 2017), defending national champion Central Oklahoma, Humboldt State (2012, 2014) and Nova Southeastern (2013).
Western Washington’s 2017 championship squad included Seward’s Izzy Barnwell and Sitka’s Megan Reid.

The 2011 title team featured Chugiak’s Christine Henie.
