Alice Johnston of Palmer was named Alaska Athlete of the Week after turning in a stunning performance at the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics.

After a ten-year absence, the former Native Games standout made a spectacular return to WEIO. She won both the Two Foot Hick Kick (78”) and One Foot Hick Kick (91”), and barely missed setting a world record in each event.

She also placed second in the Alaskan High Kick, Scissor Broad Jump, and One Hand Reach, and third in the Kneel Jump and Bench Reach.

Johnson, who grew up competing in traditional Native games, shared afterwards that while she was happy with her performance, the most rewarding aspect  was re-experiencing the sense of community that surrounds the event.

The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
