There isn’t a lot of suspense when batters step to the plate to face relief pitcher Brody Jessee of Anchorage in the minor leagues.
Hitters can expect a steady diet of his high-90s fastball and disappearing slider. And they can expect to get rung up.
Jessee has struck out 21 of 56 batters faced this season in the Cincinnati Reds farm system for a staggering 15.8 K/9 ratio.
The 22-year-old rocket right-hander is in his second pro season and currently comes out of the bullpen for the Daytona Tortugas of the Single-A Florida State League.
Between his six appearances for Daytona and two games in rookie ball, Jessee has held opponents to a .159 batting average while posting a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings.
His last outing for Daytona a few days ago against Bradenton Marauders summed up his season as he racked up five strikeouts in two innings. Ten of the 19 strikes he threw were swings and misses.
The Alaskan has now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t type stuff.
The 6-foot-4 pitcher out of South High and Gonzaga University was drafted in 2022 by the Cincinnati Reds in the 10th round.
Jessee is the 30th Alaskan and 19th pitcher.to reach at least the Single-A level in MLB’s affiliated minor leagues. It all started with Jerry Johnson of Fairbanks in 1971.
