Decathlete Jordyn Bruce of Eagle River is the Alaska Athlete of the Week.

Bruce collected another runner-up finish at the US Decathlon Championships held August 12-13 at Mt SAC, Calif. In just her second career decathlon, Bruce — who competed in track & field at Illinois State, scored 6,445 points and notched personal bests in the discus, pole vault, and 1,500-meter run. Her pole vault of 10 feet, 6 inches is one of the top marks all-time by an Alaskan woman.

The women’s decathlon (10 events) is a relatively new competition that matches the number of events that men compete in. Previously women have only been able to compete in the heptathlon (7 events).

On day one, Bruce competed in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters. Day two features the 100 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.

The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
