Corina Froehle

Anchorage’s Corina Froehle has come alive for the Eastern Washington women’s soccer team.

And pumped life back into the Eagles.

Froehle’s recent points bonanza has spearheaded a reversal of fortune for the Eagles following a 1-7 start to the season.

The senior midfielder has been especially effective this week as she assisted on the equalizer in Thursday’s 2-1 victory over Weber State and scored the opening goal in Sunday’s 1-1 tie with Montana.

Her goal against Montana came in the 30th minute on a right-footed rocket from inside the box after a touch pass from Maddie Morgan.

Froehle’s low laser beat Grizzlies’ keeper Ashlyn Dvorak, a two-time Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week who hadn’t allowed a goal in 280 minutes stretching four matches.

“(Corina) is a fifth-year senior with a ton of experience and motivated to get results here,” EWU coach Missy Strasburg said in a release. “She’s accountable on both sides of the ball. She has proven to be dangerous and she is one of the cleanest ball strikers we’ve had on this team.”

Eastern Washington improved to 1-1-1 in the Big Sky as the team enters the month of October with newly found confidence.

The former Bartlett High standout is to thank for turning the tables on a tough start that included non-conference losses to 23rd-ranked Washington State in addition to Nebraska, San Diego State and Boise State among others.

The bottom may have come in a 3-0 defeat to UC Davis. Froehle played nine minutes.

With the team in need of a spark the Alaskan was inserted into the starting lineup, and her presence made all the difference.

She made her first start in 367 days on Sept. 17 against Nevada, playing 64 minutes and scoring in the 69th minute of a 3-2 loss.

A few days later, she logged a career-high 68 minutes in a 3-2 loss at Idaho State; that was followed by a win over Weber State and a draw with Montana.

Froehle has compiled five points in the last four matches compared to six points in her previous 43.

“We’re really happy and proud of how she’s played,” Strasburg said.

Eastern Washington has five matches left in the regular season as the Eagles try to qualify for the Big Sky Championships for the first time since 2019 when Froehle was a freshman.
