Five months after scoring the state championship game-winning goal for South High, Maddie McDonald hasn’t slowed down.
The dynamic midfielder was named Conference Rookie of the Year. tallying three goals and accumulating nine points for Maryville College during her freshman campaign.
The two-time all-conference pick for the Wolverines, who scored nine goals during South’s championship season, has been a contributor to the Scots attack from game one.
She has averaged 60 minutes per game and started 14 of 18 matches for the NCAA Division III program out of the Collegiate Conference of the South.
The scoring-minded McDonald has registered 15 shots on goal. She’s also contributed four assists for a team that is 12-3-3 entering the conference tournament.
McDonald is joined in Maryville, Tennessee by fellow Alaskan and former Service High school rival Ellie Schuld.
The forward has also shined her freshman year. A gifted technical player, Schuld has produced a pair of goals and assists each in 16 appearances.
While Schuld and McDonald squared off as Anchorage high school rivals, they were also longtime club teammates, who complimented each other well on the pitch.
The Alaska duo is now in the game together for long stretches as standout freshmen for a successful Maryville team.
The Scots, who are 7-0-1 in league play, begin conference tournament play on Saturday.
