West Anchorage High School football playmaker Aaron Hampton was named our Alaska Athlete of the Week after a standout performance in the ASAA Division I First National Bowl.
The senior rushed for 137 yards and scored two touchdowns as West beat South 34-21.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder, who is highly touted receiver bound for Oregon State, had never lined up in the backfield before the final and biggest game of his high school career.
Hampton rushed for 109 yards in the third quarter alone, including a 48-yard score to put the Eagles ahead early in the 2nd half.
He also scored a touchdown from the defensive side, returning a fumble nine yards for the game’s first score.
Also receiving votes: UAF cross country runner Kendall Kramer of Fairbanks, Linwood University goalkeeper Trent Burnham of Eagle River.
The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
