Anchorage skater Max Helgeson was named Alaska Athlete of the Week after sparking his hometown team, the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, to a big win in its return to NCAA play after more than two and a half years dormant.
The former Seawolves stick boy, who was playing club hockey a year ago, delivered an insurance goal and an assist Saturday in UAA’s 3-1 win over No. 14-ranked and visiting Western Michigan.
The freshman forward racked three of UAA’s eleven shots on goal. The West Anchorage graduate bagged 37-48—85 totals in 95 games over two seasons with the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League.
It was the UAA hockey team’s first game after 937 days of dormancy and it had been 2,492 days since the Seawolves last defeated a ranked opponent. They defeated Michigan Tech 3-2 on December 5th, 2015.
The Alaska Athlete of the Week is selected by a panel each Monday.
